Sabrina Carpenter remains at numbers one and two in the singles chart. Eminem predictably tops the albums chart.
Sabrina Carpenter occupies the top two places in the singles chart again. Eminem has his eleventh number one album.
Once again, Sabrina Carpenter spent the week competing against herself at the top of the singles chart. As last week, Espresso finished the week at number one with Please Please Please staying at number two. Espresso has now spent a total of seven weeks at number one, matching Noah Kahan’s Stick Season as the longest-running number one of the year. Carpenter has now spent five weeks at numbers one and two, a feat previously managed only by Ed Sheeran.
Shaboozie spends a fourth successive week (and seventh in total) at number three with Tipsy (A Bar Song). Despite spending the last eleven weeks in the top five, it has yet to climb any higher than number three. Billie Eilish falls one place to number five with Birds Of A Feather.
Eminem’s Houdini climbs back up to number four following the release of the parent album. Two further tracks from the album enter the chart for the first time. Hearts (featuring White Gold) is at number eleven, two places ahead of Renaissance. M People had a hit with a song of the same name thirty years ago, so Renaissance does not join the list of hit song titles that are also the name of a charting act.
England didn’t quite manage to beat Spain last Sunday meaning that they finished as runners-up for the second successive Men’s Euros. However, that hasn’t stopped Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seeds back in the top ten, at number eight, with Three Lions. England fans have started using Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing In The Dark in homage to midfielder Phil Foden. As a result, the song is back in the chart at number 36. The song originally peaked at number 28 when it was released in 1984. However, it re-entered the chart the following year as the album Born In The USA eventually topped the chart, reaching a new peak of number four.
Writing about the charts can involve making some serious sacrifices. That includes spending some time I will never get back listening tot something by Ice Spice and Central Cee, two names that inspire fer in many people who prefer music. Did It First, a new entry at number fifteen, is truly horrible and I hope never to hear it again.
There was never any doubt about who would top the album chart this week with Eminem having released his twelfth studio album The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace) last week. It duly becomes his eleventh number one album to match his eleven number one singles. While his most recent chart-topping single, Houdini, is the only one to have spent more than a week at the summit, several of his albums have had longer stays at the top. They include 2010’s Recovery which spent a total of seven weeks at number one.
Taylor Swift slips back to number two with The Tortured Poets Department. It has yet to leave the top two since entering at number one three months ago. Billie Eilish falls two places to number five with Hit Me Hard And Soft.
Sarah Griffiths, known simply as Griff, reached number four in the albums chart with her mixtape One Foot In Front Of The Other. She goes one better with the release of her first full-length album, Vertigo, a new entry at number three. Insert your own Vertigo joke here. Many of the tracks had already appeared on two EPs, Vert1go Volume 1 and Ver2igo Volume 2.
Scottish band Travis had a relatively minor hit with their debut album Good Feeling in 1997. Two years later they released The Man Who which spawned a number of hit singles and spent a total of nine weeks at number one. The relatively low-level start to their career inspired the name of their third release The Invisible Band. That album also topped the chart but they have failed to repeat the feat, although they have consistently reached the top ten. They have done so again with LA Times at number four.
Cat Burns was nominated for the BBC’s Sound Of 2023 award and the Brit Awards Rising Star category but didn’t win either of them. She enters at number seven with her first album Early Twenties. She has just turned 24 so she seems to be using some Adele-style flexibility in her album title. While Cat burns, Teddy swims. His album I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy - Pt 1 is a re-entry at number 35.
American band Cigarettes After Sex are at number twelve with X’s (their apostrophe). The album is at number one in the vinyl chart, thanks in part to the lack of any physical release for the Eminem album.
American singer-songwriter Clairo makes her top forty debut with her third alum Charmm at number thirteen. Her previous peak position was with its predecessor Sling which reached number 73 in 2021.
I am off on holiday next Friday and will be away for the next four Fridays. Popchartfreak has kindly agreed to provide his alternative commentaries for those weeks. I suspect the singles chart won’t have changed much by the time I return to duty on 23 August.
