Sabrina Carpenter has the top two singles for a second week. Grace Abrams gets her first number one album.
Sabrina Carpenter competes against herself at the top of the singles chart. Taylor Swift’s biggest rival at the top of the albums chart is someone who has appeared on stage with her on some dates on her current tour.
There was a close race at the top of the singles chart this week with the only certainty being that Sabrina Carpenter would emerge as the winner. Yes, she was set to repeat last week’s feat by occupying numbers one and two. It ended up as a full repeat with Please Please Please staying at number one with Espresso as the runner-up. We have now reached the halfway point of 2024 and we still haven’t had a British act at number one.
Shaboozey climbs back up to number three with A Bar Song (Tipsy). It has now spent a total of four weeks in third place. Eminem’s Houdini is at number four. Billie Eilish is at number five with Birds Of A Feather.
After last week’s miserable one new entry, this week’s chart has a slightly fresher look with a decent crop of newcomers (in number at least). Leading the way, at number 21, is Devil Is A Lie by Tommy Richman who also remains in the chart with Million Dollar Baby.
The 2024 Glastonbury Festival opens in earnest tonight (Friday) with Dua Lipa headlining the Pyramid Stage for the first time. Tomorrow veterans Coldplay headline for a record-breaking fifth time. They have a new entry at number 25 with the ridiculously-titled feelslikeimfallinginlove. It is their 28th top forty single.
Belfast singer-songwriter Jordan Adetunji makes her chart debut with Kehlani at number 29. Kehlani becomes the latest member of the artist / title club, the members of which have been the name of a chatting act and song. Kehlani, the American singer, has had two top forty hits, in 2017 and 2020.
Two new entries have an alcohol theme, adding to the food- and drink-related songs to reach the chart this year. Champagne Supernova has long been one of Oasis’s best-known songs, despite not having been a hit single. That means that Red Wine Supernova, a new entry at number 40 for Chappell Roan, instantly becomes the highest-charting single featuring the word Supernova and the name of an alcoholic beverage in the title. Her album, The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, climbs a further three places to a new peak of number six.
Post Malone’s alcoholic title is rather more vague. Pour Me A Drink. It could, of course, refer to orange squash or tea, but the phrase does tend to be used as a request for something with a rather higher alcohol content. The song, which features top forty debutant Blake Shelton, enters at number 34.
One of the less welcome trends of recent years has been the so-called “diss track”, a song either overtly criticising another musician, or being interpreted as doing so. One such song is Girl, So Confusing by Charli XCX which has been interpreted by some as attacking Lorde. Those people might, therefore, be a little confused to find that Chali XCX has recorded a new version of the song featuring the very same Lorde. It is a new entry at number 28.
Ariana Grande gets her 35th top forty single with The Boy Is Mine at number 39. Frankly, I think it is rather dull.
American singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams has appeared alongside Taylor Swift in some dates on her current tour, including at Wembley last Sunday (23 June). On that occasion, they performed Us, a song the two of them wrote together. The song, credited to Gracie Abrams featuring Taylor Swift, is a new entry at number 37.
Last Friday Gracie Abrams released her second album The Secret Of Us. The first chart update, on Monday, showed that it was the only album with a chance of stopping Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department getting an eighth week at number one. While Abrams had a lead of more than 2:1, the actual numbers were not very high. It should also be noted that Abrams’ album was well ahead on actual sales (which tend to be very front-loaded) while Swift had a clear lead on streams. Therefore, the gap was some way short of being insurmountable.
Wednesday’s update duly showed Grace Abrams adding only about 100 “real” sales and that the gap had indeed narrowed, albeit by a fairly small margin.
By Friday Gracie Abrams was still ahead and therefore claims her first number one album. Taylor Swift slips one place to number two. Swift has two other albums in the top ten, Love at number seven and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) at number nine.
Billie Eilish is at number three with Hit Me Hard And Soft, one place ahead of Charli XCX’s Brat. The albums at numbers two, three and four each have titles all in upper case. I think that looks really ugly, so I’m sticking with a more conventional form. The Weeknd’s Highlights completes the top five.
Wirral band The Mysterines (not to be confused with the Mysterons) enter at number eleven with Afraid Of Tomorrows.
Avril Lavigne’s Greatest Hits set re-enters at number 33 ahead of her Glastonbury appearance this weekend. Ed Sheeran’s × is back at number 34 following the release of a tenth anniversary edition.
