Estelle continues long running No.1’s trend with 4 weeks in control
British soul singer Estelle has kept hold of pole position in the UK charts for a 4th week with her Kanye West duet American Boy. Australian singer Sam Sparro jumps to No.2 with Black & Gold while the only new single in the top ten is from Swedish singer September

1. Estelle feat. Kanye West - American Boy (1) For a fourth time in a row, Estelle’s duet with Kanye West is No.1 in the UK chart. The first single from her new album Shine, American Boy is by far her biggest selling and best chart performing hit ever, far eclipsing her 2004 singles 1980 and Free which peaked at No.14 and No.15 respectively. If she manages to hold onto the top spot next week, the UK will have seen three five week chart toppers in succession following Basshunter and Duffy, the only other new chart toppers of 2008 so far. Never before in UK chart history have their been three consecutive songs spending five weeks at No.1 and even if it doesn’t happen, a four week stint for Estelle is a signifier of how much the UK chart has slowed down since downloads were introduced. 1999 started with eight one week chart toppers, a situation that would be virtually unimaginable now. 2. Sam Sparro - Black & Gold (4) After two weeks in the No.4 spot, Sam Sparro’s debut single finally becomes a UK top three hit this week following its physical release, climbing two places to No.2. The Australian born singer who is now based in London having lived in America releases his debut self titled album later in the month and has been heavily championed by many music critics and publications, perhaps most notably the website Popjustice. The single has moved 23-4-4-2 in the last four weeks but No.2 looks set to be its peak with singles from Madonna and September poised to overtake him next week. 3. Flo-Rida feat. T-Pain – Low (2) Having spent two weeks in 2nd place, Low, a former US No.1 slides a place to No.3 this week. The song, which is also on the soundtrack to Step Up 2 The Streets, is one of two songs in this week’s top 40 that rapper T-Pain features on. His own single Church is at No.39 this week. Low has so far moved 40-22-12-9-7-6-2-2-3 so is finally sliding for the first time after two months on the chart. The last single to peak at No.2 which debuted at No.40 in the UK was way back in 1993 when Urban Cookie Collective’s The Key The Secret moved 40-29-20-11-6-2-2-4-6-7-13-20-33 during its top 40 run. Flo-Rida’s rapper’s album Mail On Sunday was released last week in the UK and the next single due to be released from it is Elevator, which features Timbaland. 4. Madonna feat Justin Timberlake - 4 Minutes (8) Yo-yoing in the top ten since its download release a few weeks ago, the first single from Madonna’s new album Hard Candy, which is due out on April 28th, has so far moved 7-5-8-4 in the UK. The track, which features Justin Timberlake and is produced by Timbaland, receives its physical release on April 21st and after a slow start by Madonna’s usual ‘comeback single standards’, the song could well climb to No.1 next week on downloads alone as it is currently on top of the iTunes chart thanks to increased promotion following the release of the video this week. Even if the track is not No.1 this time next week, it should comfortably become a 12th UK No.1 for the legendary singer the following week when physical sales are added. 5. Mariah Carey – Touch My Body (6) Selling well on physicals for a second week and still top ten on downloads, Mariah Carey’s new single Touch My Body, the first to be taken from her new album E=MC2 climbs a place to No.5 this week. The track, which is currently at No.1 in the US for a second week, is therefore Mariah’s first UK top five hit since 2005’s No.2 hit We Belong Together and her 16th UK top five hit in total. It bodes well for the album which is released on Monday and should become another UK top ten album for Mariah this time next week. 6. Duffy – Mercy (5) Duffy continues an incredible run with this former No.1 single which is now on its ninth week inside the UK top ten. The track is currently making waves across the world topping charts in a number of European countries already with the US the next country the singer will aim to conquer. Duffy’s debut album Rockferry has also returned to the top spot this week for a fifth week in total and with the next single Warwick Avenue due for release next month, the album looks set to sell well right throughout the year in the UK and is already the year’s biggest seller. 7. The Kooks - Always Where I Need To Be (3) Sliding four places from its first appearance in the top ten last week, The Kooks new single has now become the first single of 2008 to peak at No.3. The No.3 slot this year has otherwise been occupied by songs falling from No.1 or No.2. The single is the first to be lifted from the Brighton based indie band’s second album Konk, which is due out on Monday and a near certainty to top the chart this time next week to become their first UK No.1 album. 8. Leona Lewis - Better In Time/Footprints In The Sand (7) Down just a place after five weeks in the top ten in its double a-side form, Leona’s single is holding up incredibly well for a charity release, which usually sell well initially before plummeting. Better In Time has been selling well on iTunes America throughout the week, reaching the top twenty thanks to people cherry picking the track from Spirit. Her debut album, which has sold nearly two million copies here, has been released in the US this week in a slightly altered form, with the new tracks Forgive Me and Misses Glass, and is certain to follow Bleeding Love to the No.1 spot in the US when the chart is announced in the week. 9. September – Cry For You (NEW) The highest new entry in the UK chart this week is from Swedish female singer September. The singer’s first UK single Satellites failed to reach the top 75 due to poor promotion on behalf of the record label AATW. Cry For You was already a hit in Sweden a few years ago and has been remixed for the UK and released on Hard2Beat records, the record label that has had huge success already this year with Basshunter and H ‘Two’ O feat Platnum. The track is on downloads alone this week and should climb into the top three at least when physically released on Monday. Should it reach No.1 next week, September will be the third Swedish chart topper in the last year after Robyn and Basshunter. 10. Chris Brown – With You (9) Down just a place on its third week in the top ten, Chris Brown’s former US No.2 single has so far moved 35-19-16-14-17-8-9-10 in the top 40. The track is yet to reach the iTunes top ten so must be selling quite well on physicals. His next single is most likely to be No Air, his duet with American Idol Season 7 winner Jordin Sparks. No Air has already been in the US top five and is currently in the UK iTunes top 100 following an American Idol performance of the track. Other notable movers and shakers in the top 40: 11. Black Kids – I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (84) The debut UK single from American indie rock act Black Kids is perhaps a surprise hit this week, seemingly emerging from nowhere and losing out on a top ten placing at the last minute. It debuted at No.84 on downloads last week but following its physical release the track jumps to No.11 this week. The band performed live on Jools Holland earlier in the month and their debut album is scheduled for UK release in the summer. 14. Usher feat Young Jeezy – Love In This Club (16) On it’s third week in the UK top 40, American singer Usher’s former US No.1 single, the electro ballad Love In This Club continues in the right direction, climbing a further two places this week. This is largely due to the fact that the video was finally released to music channels this week and as a result the song has jumped into the iTunes top ten for the first time. All signs point towards this song moving into the top ten next week and becoming his biggest hit since 2005’s Caught Up, which peaked at No.9 but was preceded by three much bigger singles in 2004, the No.1 singles Yeah! and Burn and the top 5 single Confessions Part II/My Boo. 16. Fragma – Toca’s Miracle 2008 (29) After a gap of six and a half years between UK singles, German dance act Fragma finally score a sixth UK top forty hit with Toca’s Miracle 2008, the new remix of their 2000 No.1 single which shifted over half a million copies in the UK alone. The band were no one hit wonders and this is in fact their 5th UK top twenty hit following Toca Me (#11, 1999), Toca’s Miracle (#1, 2000), Everytime You Need Me (#3, 2001) and You Are Alive (#4, 2001). The new remix package includes the Inpetto 2008 mixes and the original 2000 version as well as a poppier sounding remix from Wez Clarke and a garage remix from Wideboys. 19. Scouting For Girls – Heartbeat (27) The fourth single to be lifted from pop-indie trio Scouting For Girls’ self titled debut album, Heartbeat is similar in vein to the previous two singles She’s So Lovely and Elvis Ain’t Dead, both of which reached the UK top ten. Both of those singles were slow burners with the latter finally reaching the top ten a month after its physical release. This one could well continue the trend, so don’t be surprised if its in a higher position this time next week. 20. Natasha Bedingfield and Sean Kingston – Love Like This (30) With her brother Daniel seemingly gone from the music world, Natasha is left flying the Bedingfield flag and returns to the UK top 20 for the first time since Soulmate last year with this new R&B duet with Sean Kingston. The song was considerably more popular in the US where it peaked at No.11 and sold over a million downloads. It is unlikely to go any higher with this week being its physical release week, but keeps up the singer’s 100% top twenty strike rate. All seven of her physically released UK singles have reached the top twenty, five of them reaching the top ten. Her biggest selling and highest peaking hit is the 2004 No.1 single These Words, though it is perhaps the anthemic Unwritten that is best remembered due to its usage in numerous TV shows and advertisements. Love Like This also gives Sean Kingston a second top twenty hit after his No.1 single Beautiful Girls last year. 22. Elliot Minor – Parallel Worlds (NEW) York based five piece Elliot Minor have reached the UK top 40 four times before with the original Parallel Worlds (#31), Jessica (#19), The White One Is Evil (#27) and Still Figuring Out (#17). Named after the fact that their songs are all played with minor chords, the re-issue of their debut single Parallel Worlds is back into the UK chart at No.22 exactly a year after its initial release. Their long awaited self titled debut album is out on Monday and with an ever growing fanbase, it should reach the top ten this time next week. 23. Britney Spears – Break The Ice (25) On its last week before the physical comes out, the third single from Britney’s current album Blackout makes a small climb to No.23. She will be hoping for a major climb next week or it will become her first single to miss the UK top ten since I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll stalled at No.13 back in 2002. Considering Piece Of Me surged 19-2 at the start of the year following its own physical release, it would hardly be a shock to find Britney in the top ten next week but a top 15 placing is looking more likely this time around. 24. The Last Shadow Puppets – The Age Of The Understatements (NEW) With Arctic Monkeys on a mini break, lead singer Alex Turner has recorded a new album with this side project. The duo’s other member is Miles Kane from The Rascals. This debut single is released physically on Monday and could find itself in the top ten this time next week ahead of the album of the same name which is due out on April 21st. 29. Will.I.Am feat Cheryl Cole – Heartbreaker (49) Black Eyed Peas member Will.I.Am’s solo career has not been anywhere near as successful as his colleague Fergie’s thus far with his first single, I Got It From My Mama stalling at No.38 last year. The chance of success for his new single Heartbreaker is much higher though and it climbs into the top 40 for the first time this week on the strength of downloads alone. The track and the video features Girls Aloud’s Cheryl Cole who came to appear in the song when auditioning for the part of the video on the ITV2 programme ‘The Passions Of Girls Aloud’. It is the first time any member of Girls Aloud has featured on a single away from the band and duly gives Will.I.Am his biggest solo single in the UK. It is however, the album version without Cheryl’s vocals which is charting here with the remixed radio version due out in a few weeks. 37. Cahill feat Nikki Belle – Trippin’ On You (NEW) British dance act Cahill’s debut single Trippin’ On You is a summery pop-dance crossover track which makes its entry at No.37 on downloads alone this week. On the chart show, Fearne & Reggie suggested that Nikki Belle is infact one half of Hot ‘N’ Juicy who hit No.2 with the Mousse T collaboration Horny in 1998. Emma Lanford, the other half of the duo, has sung on other Mousse T singles, most notably Is It Cos I’m Cool which reached the UK top ten in 2004. The truth behind this ‘fact’ is however a mystery. In the ‘Now 40’ booklet, the singers were known as Nadine Richardson and Emma Southam (now Lanford) while the ‘Now 61’ booklet suggested that Inaya Day was one of the singers of ‘Horny’…will we ever find out whether it was Nikki, Nadine or Inaya who completed the duo? Trippin’ On You is released on AATW records, the single is out physically on April 21st. 38. Adele – Hometown Glory (Re-entry) British soul singer Adele has had a great start to 2008 with a No.1 album, 19, and a No.2 single Chasing Pavements. Her debut single Hometown Glory was released on limited formats last year and missed the chart as a result. However, when the album was released earlier in the year, the track reached No.32 in the UK top 40 as a cherry picked album track. Thanks to promotion on Skins and Jools Holland this week the song has been downloaded enough to re-appear at No.38 despite her official next single Cold Shoulder not reaching the top 40 on downloads yet. Next weeks chart Estelle will be hoping to match the success of the previous two UK No.1’s from Basshunter and Duffy by spending a 5th week in control with American Boy. It looks to be her biggest challenge yet though with Madonna’s 4 Minutes surging ahead on iTunes and September’s Cry For You out physically on Monday. Flo Rida feat T-Pain, Sam Sparro and Usher could all be in contention for the top slot next week as well while other notable singles that are physically released tomorrow include Kanye West, The Last Shadow Puppets and Scooter as well as Britney Spears who will be hoping to surge into the top ten with Break The Ice. There are notable new albums out tomorrow from The Kooks, Mariah Carey, Elliot Minor, Fall Out Boy and Jordin Sparks with The Kooks certain to topple Duffy from No.1, while Mariah and Elliot Minor should reach the top ten.
